Four days before the round of 16 first leg in the Champions League at Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea cannot get past a 1-1 (1-1) draw against West Ham United. In the Premier League game against the relegation candidates on Saturday, the Blues showed a strong performance over long stretches, but were not rewarded with three points. Sharing the points in the London derby is Chelsea's next setback in the race for international places.

The Blues got off to a really good start at London's Olympic Stadium. The ball was already in the Hammers' net after nine minutes, but winter new signing Joao Felix was about to score offside. Just seven minutes later, the Portugal international reappeared in front of the home side's goal and converted a perfect pass from 120m Enzo Fernandez to put them 1-0 ahead. The weakness of the last seven away games in a row without a win was not noticeable in Graham Potter's team. After 23 minutes, Chelsea followed up through German international Kai Havertz, but the goal didn't count due to a narrow offside position.

In the 28th minute, Chelsea suffered a serious blow after a strong start. Ex-player Emerson, of all people, easily pushed in after a cross from a few meters to make it 1-1. Ten minutes before the break, the Blues took control of the game again. Noni Madueke (34'), Fernandez (36') and Felix (40') put a lot of pressure on the renewed lead with good offensive actions before half-time, but West Ham trembled with the draw in the dressing room.

After the break, the two London clubs were evenly matched, but Chelsea were a little closer to making it 2-1. With half an hour left, the guests increased the pressure and often pushed West Ham far back. But there were initially no great opportunities. The Blues had to tremble in the closing stages after a goal by Tomas Soucek. First Declan Rice's header was denied by keeper Kepa, then the Czech international took the lead from Soucek. The jubilation was short-lived. A few minutes later, the VAR indicated a narrow offside position by Rice before the supposed 2-1. On the other hand, Chelsea should have been awarded a penalty. Soucek went to the ball with his hand, but referee Craig Pawson and the VAR did not recognize the hand player. And so it stayed with the draw in the derby.
